My childhood was confined to too much dust

in the arid West Texas dust-bowl,

where a piece of a broken amber colored bottle

became one day's treasure to feed beauty in my soul.

The same day I imagined as I dug a hole,

dug deeply enough, the hole would emerge in China.

Wherever, whatever the mystery of China was,

was my first stimulus, my first hunger to know.

"And so, a little child shall lead them,"

and she still resides within

as fresh as this morning's sunrise,

as free as this morning's wind.

She listens to that "still small voice"

and makes no judgment of its merit.

Recognizing its source, she does rejoice

and hastens to implement it.
