"The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death" (Rev. 20:13-14).

I included this verse in the previous journal, "Growing Pains" (See End Note "A"). After writing that "death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire," I put "good riddance" in parentheses. Soon, second thoughts about it caused me to recant: "Oops, sorry Lord." I said, "I guess that sounds pretty snotty. Shall I take it out?" Immediately after asking, I heard, "No, leave it in. Death and hell are the trash heap of all human fears." So, I left it in and began to ponder again the fear of death, a topic which has been like a thread running throughout my writings. Or to put it another way, death and hell were the bars which kept me in bondage until God opened wide the prison doors and set me free. Hallelujah! In "Growing Pains," I mentioned that, instead of living the victorious life, many Christians still cower in fear of these twin terrors, which is why they glom onto any sort of doctrine or teaching that will give them some (alleged) control over it.

Before I go further with this, I want to include an e-mail comment here from John Gavazzoni, which fits into my thoughts today:

"If you do a follow up on "Growing Pains" I would like to see you give some explanation regarding the powers that are circumscribed by the power of God. You do briefly mention Satan as a mere tool in the Job scenario but for those whose minds flash to a number of scriptures that speak of principalities and powers a more detailed explanation would help. They may erroneously conclude by your description of a one power universe that you have not taken these other scriptures into consideration. I have often felt that in giving an answer for the hope that lies within us, particularly in the subject you're dealing with we should make it clear that God brings about evil in a different way than He saves, heals and delivers. The latter is a result of the direct touch of His Spirit with His intrinsic goodness while the former is brought into existence by His withholding Himself from the Evil One, so that in his perceived autonomy, Satan is a malignant will in God's universe that contaminates everything he touches, quite unlike God, but as you and I know, ultimately he serves the purpose of God. To state my point as clearly as possible, we want to avoid being understood as believing that evil arises out of the intrinsic Purity which is God Himself. We are all of us, men and angels, so constituted that we need Him as love, light and life, with the result that when He in His wisdom deprives us of that for a season, we are exposed to that malignancy of autonomous existence (so-called "free will") that we were not ultimately created for. In short, we must spend a season exposed to and contaminated by that which is alien to us so that we might fully absorb that for which we were created. Our natural, created capacity for God must be temporarily filled with the perverse so that finally we cry out for His Goodness ("God-ness"). It seems that the only possible preparation for being filled with all the fulness of God is to be "consumed with all unrighteousness (unrightness)" bringing about a cry of desperation which is the necessary condition of "right-filling" and which lies at the heart of faith. I'm beginning to get clearer on something: that our natural capacity for God, though given by Him, is powerless to fulfill itself and awaits His touch of grace. What a dilemma natural man is faced with (I'm not yet speaking of sinful man); he has a capacity, thus a need and is utterly incapable of doing anything about it until touched by grace. That's why he is so vulnerable to turn to anything that promises to fill him because he can't stand the awful silence of God while his cavernous need is ever before him. When you add the perversity of sin and death to his natural state he is now really ready to experience grace. In other words, sinfulness compounds the dilemma of naturalness setting man up for grace. This is what I want to look at more carefully and God permitting probe to its core. Of course, you set out to make the point that it is God and God alone, not any out-of-control rogue spirit that we are all ultimately dealing with and real mature faith operates in that knowledge; that you have powerfully done. I can't help it that you have a quality to your writing that invariably moves me to say, 'Hey, I want to look even more carefully at this.'" End Quote.

As usual, John's remarks sparked me to greater depths of contemplation of the divine enigma of the role of good and evil in our lives. In this journal, I want to clarify and expand upon the points I raised in "Growing Pains," which pounded home the absolute sovereignty of God. Christians who do not understand this truth of God's absolute power, fear the devil and his works, his powers, and his destruction, but the Hebrew writer gives us the best possible answer to those fears, "Since the children have flesh and blood, He too (Christ) shared in their humanity so that by His death he might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death" (Heb. 2:14-15). As one who was enslaved by the fear of death for many years, I rejoiced when God first quickened this verse to me, and never cease to shout the good news, that the devil's power is finished!!! When I talked about a "two power universe," I was referring to the fact that so many Christians appear to believe that it's a toss up as to who will be the ultimate victor. They sing "Victory in Jesus," that grand old hymn, with all their hearts, but still fear the wiles of the devil in their lives.

This was evidenced clearly at Halloween, when you saw some people running to scary movies, or masquerading as dark forces, while others, mostly Christians, ran the other way shrieking in horror. Why would a kid in a scary mask set a normally rational person's teeth on edge? Because they don't have the absolute assurance that God is the all powerful one with whom we have to do, and because in spite of brave professions of faith to the contrary, there's a whole lot of superstitious nonsense still floating around masquerading itself as spiritual wisdom! Before I had the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, I was very caviler about the devil, but once I realized that Jesus is real, it came to me immediately thereafter, that so is the devil! At that point, I began my "teenage years" as Lenny calls them, getting the term from the Apostle John, who said, "I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, (teenagers) because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one" (I John 2:14). As an aside, it was necessary for me to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit as a separate act of grace, because like the saints at Ephesus, whom Paul encountered, I had not been taught that the Holy Spirit was active in the world today (Acts 19:1-6). Shortly after this occurrence, I began to see the devil's works everywhere I looked, and called on God's power to deliver me constantly. I took very seriously Peter's admonition to "resist (the devil), steadfast in the faith" (I Pet. 5:7).

You'll probably snicker when I tell you this, but I actually cast the devil out of my clothes dryer one day because it was not working properly. It did start working again, which gave me pause, and also caused me to wonder how in the world had I survived so long without knowing about binding, casting and pleading? (I refer to binding the devil, casting him out, and pleading the blood of Jesus, for those of you who haven't been exposed to this teaching.) And how in the world could I ever get anything done in my life, when those exorcist type activities took so much time out of my day? Hyper vigilance against the wiles of the devil is exhausting in the utmost, and in the long run, unproductive, because by concentrating on him so much, you've actually given him the glory, rather than God. I am sickened when I hear preachers continually warning the flock about the devil's tricks and his power and proclivity to ensnare us into sin. I want to rise up and shout, "You ninny! Who are you glorifying here? God alone deserves the glory, not the devil!" While Jesus did teach His disciples to bind the strong man (Matt. 12:29; Mk. 3:27; Lk. 11:21), He also taught them that their eye must be single and full of light. "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!" (Matt. 6:22-23). As Lenny would put it, double vision (seeing a two power universe) will kill you. To that I add, that if it doesn't, it will plunge you into outer darkness where there is weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth, and where you are left alone with your fear of the devil and his dastardly deeds.

After this short period of feverish devil bashing, God, in His mercy and kindness, gave me an advanced lesson in dealing with "old slew foot." He led me to Eph. 4:27: "Neither give place to the devil." "Ah, ha!" I thought. Was I giving place to the devil by looking for him everywhere? Indeed, I was. The Spirit had not yet quickened to me the implications of Paul's magnificent statement, "For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority" (Col. 2:9-10). Since Christ IS head over every power and authority, and His fulness was given to me in Him, how could there be any place left for Satan to operate? That is the foundational truth which empowered me to give him no place. Again, this verse is a cogent witness to the sovereignty of God in every situation, over every person, and over every power in the universe.

Little by little, the Spirit led me to several scriptures which delivered me from deliverance. "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light" (I Pet. 2:9). Notice that the verb is past tense. He called us out of darkness. Please don't hold it against me, and run away in disgust when next we meet, but I was an English teacher for a time, and while I may have been overzealous, some would say stupid, about dealing with the devil, nevertheless, I do know about verb tenses. Past tense means that it's already done, over, finished. Were that not the case, then we would all have to continually keep casting, binding and pleading, but Jesus died once for all. And because He did, all He accomplished in His death, burial and resurrection, is ours continuously because now, we are alive to God: "For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. (Or us, which is our legacy as heirs and joint-heirs with Christ.) The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus." (Rom. 6:10-11; Heb. 10:10; I Pet. 3:18). "And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again" (II Cor. 5:15).

Regarding Christ's sacrifice, the Hebrew writer makes it clear that He did not have to go to the cross over and over again. "Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself" (Heb. 9:25-26). Likewise, we do not have to continually fight the devil. The battle was won at the cross! Because Christ has "done all," we have only to stand on His victory! (Eph. 6:13). Praise His holy and mighty name!

One other scripture played an important part in delivering me from fear of the devil. "When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross" (Col. 2:13-15). It came to me in the Holy Spirit's school of higher education, that if Christ had already paid the price to deliver me from the machinations of the evil ones, i.e., the principalities and powers against whom we wrestle (Eph. 6:12), then I could relax. I began to practice resting in the sovereignty of God, by giving the devil no place, until now it is second nature to me. It is a part of my inheritance in the New Creation, which I am in Christ. My mind has been renewed (Rom. 12:2), is being renewed, and will be renewed (a continuous process) as God is conforming me to the image of His Son (Rom. 8:29). I do not say that I have attained ultimate perfection, but with Paul, I ask God "Only let us live up to what we have already attained" (Phil. 3:16).

Before launching into the second part of this journal, I want to remind us all again that Paul said, "The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law" (I Cor. 15:56). What does this have to do with anything, you ask? It has everything to do with the trash heap of all human fears, for to the degree that you are still trying to become righteous by keeping the law and fearing the consequences if you do not, or cannot, then to that degree you will be afraid. Add hell fire, the lake of fire, the second death, and everlasting punishment into the mix, and you will be terrified, all the time! Think of it this way. If there is ANYTHING you can do to separate yourself from the love of God, then you had better be afraid, and you will be afraid. The remedy for that fear is to know that "neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Rom. 8:39). This is awesome reassurance of God's unconditional love for us, because human kind has had an abysmal track record of keeping law, as the Bible clearly tells us from the first page to the last. Try as we might, we simply cannot keep it. Why? Because we were created as light bearers, not galley slaves. We were designed by our Creator to be filled with all the fulness of the Godhead bodily (Col. 2:9), and in Christ Jesus, we are filled with the light of the world so that, in Him, we BECOME the light of the world (Matt. 5:14; Jn. 9:5). Jesus said of us, who follow Him, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." We are to be cities set on a hill, not refuse dumps.

Do you see that our eternal destiny is to be what God created us to be, not what we are as a result of our own efforts? Please tell me you see this, because if you do not, then we've got to re-enroll in kindergarten again. The Hebrew writer bemoans, "In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!" (Heb. 5:12). Why is this true? Because, as Paul wrote Timothy, there are those who "want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm" (I Tim. 1:7). This is a perfect description of those who do not walk by the Spirit, but after the flesh. The law, as Lenny says, was for the flesh, for the discipline and correction of the flesh. Unfortunately for those still trying to keep it, "All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: 'Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law'" (Gal. 3:10). I can't help but notice that most Fundamentalists never claim to keep the entire law. Instead, they specialize in one or two parts that they appear to be able to keep, and these, they attempt to bind on everyone else. Joyously, the New Covenant is for the spirit, because our spirit is indwelt by the living Christ (Gal. 2:20), who "was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world" (Jn. 1:9, KJV).

I've quoted John Gavazzoni more than once on this topic of our works having nothing to do with our righteousness, but his quote is too good not to repeat here. He says, "If there's anything about my salvation that I can mess up, then just punch my ticket for hell." I hope I've made it clear to all, that fear of the devil is a consequence of trying to live by law, rather than by grace, and by failing to understand the absolute sovereignty of God. We continue to mess things up UNTIL we see that the old man was crucified (past tense) with Christ with the result that the New Creation has been set free from the law of sin and death. May God help us to know at a cellular level that "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death" (Rom. 8:1-2). And may He help us to repent, (change our minds) about trying to work our way to heaven, to righteousness, to holiness, to purity, all of which are gifts given to us by grace, not works lest any man should boast (Eph. 2: 8-9). When we fall back into works, we've got a landscape littered with lopsided towers of Babel, pitiful relics of man's efforts to get to God on his own steam: "Then they said, 'Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth'" (Gen. 11:4). God confused their language then, and He certainly confuses our language today as anyone knows who has tried to make sense out of all the conflicting dogma professed by thousands of denominations and religious organizations, all claiming to serve God in purity and truth, and that their way to heaven is the correct one.

The interesting thing to me is that the Fundamentalists, among whom we minister, will always protest and say, "But we don't live under law. We live under grace." Brave words, but based on the frenetic religious activity we see and hear, I conclude that perhaps some do not understand what grace actually is. Over a year ago now, we attended a Wednesday night service at a local church here in Neosho. The preacher was teaching on Romans, which most agree is the New Testament pinnacle of grace. The preacher asked the question, "What is grace?" An elderly lady sitting near the front, whom I've known all my life, raised her hand and replied, "Grace is what you get when you obey God." Fortunately, we were sitting near the back so she couldn't view the look on my face or see me poke Lenny with my elbow. In her mind, grace was only available if you tried as hard as you could, and still couldn't obey God. Of course, He does give us grace then, but consider these passages: Jesus said, "But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked" (Luke 6:35, NIV). This is in that wonderful passage where He asks, "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' do that" (Vss. 32-33). God, He reminded His listeners, is kind "TO THE UNGRATEFUL AND WICKED." Now, that my friends, IS GRACE DEFINED!

There are many, many scriptures I could use here, but in the interest of brevity, which the Lord willing, I shall attain if I live long enough, let me just include one more. "You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Rom. 5:6-8). That makes me want to fall on my face in worship that God loves me just the way I am. Why? Because when He looks at me, He sees the lovely face of Jesus looking back at Him (II Cor. 4:6), not Jan's pitiful efforts to be good.

These scriptures and many more are right there for anyone to see, and yet, so few apparently see them. This is because God has to open our spiritual eyes to discern spiritual truth. People who tackle the Bible with their natural minds, can memorize it, categorize it, quote it, and proclaim it, but often they can't see the forest for the trees. Interpreted by the Holy Spirit, the Bible ministers life and love; interpreted by the mind, it often becomes the letter of the law, bringing death (II Cor. 3:6). I've been so very blessed in my life to have good teachers, and one of the very best has been our dear friend Harry Robert Fox. God sent him into my life when I was in my mid-twenties to tell me the Good News, i.e., that God's plan provided for everyone to be saved by faith, rather than the "Bad News" that we must be saved by obedience to law, or risk everlasting punishment. I recently had the privilege to build him a webpage and upload many of the teachings that I have feasted on for years. If you haven't read it, I would encourage you to treat yourself to his writing entitled, "Letter to a Mormon Friend" (End Note "B"), because it is one of the best discussions of law and grace that I've ever read. You can substitute Methodist friend, Baptist friend, Church of Christ friend, Assemblies of God friend, Manifest Sonship friend, Presbyterian friend, Catholic friend, or the name of any other religious friend in there in place of "Mormon friend," and it will read the same way. One of the places where Harry shines, is his understanding of the difference between law and grace and his ability to explain it in simple terms.

In this superb article, he writes, "It is precisely in these two verses (i.e., Galatians 3:19-20) that the glory of the Gospel is most marvelously revealed. {"What, then, was the purpose of the law? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was put into effect through angels by a mediator. A mediator, however, does not represent just one party; but God is one."} For here is where Paul draws out an amazing implication. He says that an intermediary "implies more than one." And that was indeed the situation when God issued His law to the children of Israel on Mt. Sinai. God on one side and Israel on the other side required Moses as an intermediary because a two-party agreement was to be put into effect. Such an agreement can come into existence only if each party to the agreement agrees to do his part. Thus, it is a conditional agreement. If either party fails to live up to the conditions, the agreement becomes null and void. And of course, it wasn't any time after the agreement at Sinai was ratified that the children of Israel failed to keep their side of the agreement. BUT, Paul says, in what went on between God and Abraham the situation is radically different. For in that instance, Paul says, "God is one" that is, God is acting alone WITHOUT A MEDIATOR. This implies that God made to Abraham a UNILATERAL PROMISE, not a two-party agreement. Thus God was not depending on Abraham or anyone else in the fulfilling of his promise. In other words it was an UNCONDITIONAL PROMISE.

"Most of us in our day to day lives are almost totally unacquainted with anything of an unconditional nature. That is why it is so hard for us to accept the idea of the unconditional grace of God which is showered on us so prodigiously in Christ. In this connection Jesus instructs us in Luke 6:35 to "love your enemies, and do good, and lend EXPECTING NOTHING IN RETURN; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the MOST HIGH; for he is kind to the UNGRATEFUL and the SELFISH. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful." We are so unaccustomed to such unconditional giving that we resist believing it." End Quote. (See End Note "C" to read Harry's chart on "Law versus Gospel").

What God has done for me, in opening my eyes to see this great truth, I pray He will do all who read these words. Until we understand that God sent His only begotten Son into the world as a fulfillment of His UNCONDITIONAL promise to Abraham (Gal. 3:14,16,18,29), we cannot grasp the full significance of this magnificent gift. Salvation is a gift, dear ones, as is the kingdom of heaven. If we have to earn it, then it is not a gift, Paul says, but wages due for services rendered: "If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about, but not before God. What does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." (Rom. 4:2-3). He concludes, "Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation. However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness" (Rom. 4:4-5). Am I suggesting here that Paul is saying that we never need to work? Of course not. Both Jesus and John the Baptist called for repentance, but Paul came along and explained that rather than being a work, repentance is a response to the unconditional love of God who sent His only Begotten Son to die for the world's sins (Jn. 3:16-17). We do not repent in order to obtain forgiveness, as many preach today. That's exactly backwards. We repent BECAUSE we have been forgiven, which gives us the energy and faith necessary to obey God. Paul clearly shows this in the passage just quoted in Rom. 4:2-5, and also in Rom. 5:6, "For when we were yet without strength, in due time, Christ died FOR THE UNGODLY." Even the faith it takes to repent is itself a gift, again, "lest any man should boast" (Eph. 2:8-9).

Not only was it grace through faith which enabled us to repent, but after we were saved, our works continue to flow out of the Spirit of God living in us. Jesus said, "Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work" (John 8:28; 14:10). When we understand this truth clearly, we then enter into the rest of God. God is the one who does the works through us. To repeat, He gives us the faith to repent, and after He saves us, He gives us the faith to do whatever other works He has called us to do from before the foundation of the world (I Tim. 1:9-10). When I hear preachers ask, "Have you done your best for God?" I want to shout, "No, I didn't because I couldn't, but when I was yet ungrateful and selfish in my sins, He did His best for me and that gave me the strength and energy to follow Him wherever He may lead." Lenny and I have often fellowshipped over this truth and have rejoiced that we only have to show up wherever He sends us, and He will do the teaching through us. Lenny goes to the adult men's Sunday School class at the Baptist church every week, and whatever the Spirit puts on his heart is what he shares. If he gets nothing from the Lord, he says nothing. Moreover, when he does share something, he knows that it is up to the Spirit to make his words life and truth to the men. I only write what I get from the Spirit. I've said before that God humors my little neurosis, i.e., my need to have a graphic and a title before I write. I've had the graphic and the title of this piece for two months now, but I couldn't write it until the words began to flow. We don't write and publish or speak on any set schedule, because we only want to speak when the Spirit gives us utterance. We take no responsibility for the outcome of our words, but leave that up to God. What a truly freeing way to minister! It is living in "the rest of God" (Heb. 4:3). God's unconditional love has been the wind beneath my wings for over thirty years now.

And this is what I want for you to experience in your life as well. You cannot get there without acknowledging the complete sovereignty of God in the world today. The bedrock foundation on which all truth rests is that He is in charge of absolutely everything, including who wins the presidential election, by the way. When He opens your eyes to see it, you will put your hands in His and you will leave behind the trash heap of all human fears, the dread of death and hell, and you will rest with Him in green pastures beside the still waters, the water of life. From that sublime place, we can all exalt with Paul, "Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed; in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (I Cor. 15:51-57). So let it be written; so let it be done in our lives.

The victory in Jesus was already won. Not by my works, but by God's, it was done. Jesus, the Lamb slain, was always God's plan; He summoned us in Christ before time began. The sovereign call came to the whole human race, echoing through time, on earth, and through space. 

God's plan unveiled is the New Creation, the restoration of all in every nation. He chose us in Jesus, His will to be. He called us and saved us and set us free. He lifted us up from the sin soiled land and set us on Mt. Zion where with angels we stand. 

In Christ's glory, far above the devil's turf, we shout "Victory" to all on the earth. This message of hope, every heart proclaims, "The kingdom has come. Our God reigns!"
