Illustrated by our granddaughter Hannah

In the middle of the night, in the middle of the house,

I heard a scritch, scratch, scritching; it had to be a mouse.

Our kitties heard the noise; to them there was no doubt.

Crouching on their haunches, they were ready to take him out.

The little devil was sneaky, hiding in the drawer.

He knew they couldn't get him, unless he came out on the floor.

Since I was getting sleepy, I had to go to bed.

I'm not sure what the mouse felt, but probably fear and dread.

Several nights passed in silence, and knowing mousy ways,

I think the critter's gone, gone, gone, escaped in a mousy blaze.

We hope he told his friends, to give this house a miss,

and we award our hero kitties, a big hug and a kiss.

They are our guard cats, standing against the mice.

We think they are special, very cute and oh, so nice.

Some folks don't like cats, saying they won't obey,

but they do what they do best in their own special way.

Dogs are nice, of course, and beloved by my spouse,

but as for me, you can't beat a cat around the house.
